Pay Rate: $52/hour (W2 through KellyOCG for John Deere)

Position Summary

As an Embedded Software Engineer supporting John Deere’s Agricultural Engineering Embedded Software team in Waterloo, Iowa, you will be an integral member of a software development team. You will collaborate with developers, testers, and stakeholders to deliver optimized and validated software solutions.

The team is empowered to overcome challenges, plan and prioritize work, and contribute throughout the product development lifecycle. Team members have opportunities to work directly on the final product, including system development, validation, and tuning.

This position supports the Drivetrain Electronics team, which is responsible for transmission controls on large tractors. You will develop embedded software that provides customers with valuable operational features while meeting functional safety objectives.

You will also develop deep knowledge of system features to support current products and contribute to future designs.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, integrate, validate, and tune embedded software for transmission-control systems.
• Collaborate with software developers, testers, engineers, and other stakeholders.
• Support the development of optimized and validated software solutions.
• Apply control theory to embedded agricultural applications.
• Write and review software requirements.
• Follow established software development processes for embedded applications.
• Contribute to system troubleshooting, technical problem solving, and feature development.
• Support current products and the development of future system designs.
• Conduct testing by operating John Deere tractors on facility grounds.

Required Qualifications

• Demonstrated technical problem-solving ability.
• Demonstrated expertise developing embedded applications using C, MATLAB Simulink, or similar tools.
• Demonstrated expertise applying control theory.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Experience writing and reviewing software requirements.
• Experience following a software development process for embedded applications.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with the design or diagnostics of transmission, mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic systems.
• Strong interest in embedded engineering and learning new technologies.
• Experience designing and analyzing control systems for agricultural applications.
• Experience with model-based software development tools.
• Knowledge of electronic circuits and components, including the ability to read schematics and datasheets.
• Experience with continuous integration and automated build tools.
• Experience using embedded systems tools, including emulators, compilers, and simulators.
• Experience with automotive communication protocols, such as:
  • CAN
  • LIN
  • Ethernet
• Experience using laboratory equipment, including:
  • Logic analyzers
  • Oscilloscopes

Education

Ideally, candidates will have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent related work experience in one of the following fields:

• Software Engineering
• Computer Engineering
• Computer Science
• Electrical Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering

• This is an onsite-only position; remote work is not available.

• Metatarsal safety shoes are required on the first day.
• The position requires operating John Deere tractors for testing:
